School Applications

Applying for school places

Most schools and academies in Trafford have a catchment area, and schools give priority to children who live in that catchment area. Looked after and previously looked after children are given the highest priority for school admission.

Faith schools also have a catchment area. However, this is usually be based on parishes, and priority can be given to children that meet the faith criteria over a looked after or previously looked after child who does not meet the faith criteria.

Applying for a Reception or Year 7 place

If a child lives in Trafford and will be starting Reception or Year 7 in September, applications are sent to Trafford Council. It does not matter if the school choice is in another local authority; they will work with the other areas to provide a school place.

The final date for Reception place applications is in January and Year 7 places are in October. The Trafford School Admissions will give exact date.

If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), their transfer to primary or secondary school will be handled by Trafford’s EHC Team. Contact email: myEHC@trafford.gov.uk

In-year applications

An ‘in-year’ application is when a child transfers from one school to another, during the academic year. An application can be made directly to any school or using Trafford’s online application portal.
