Post-16 Pupil Premium

In October 2021, we were successful in their bid to a pilot for Post-16 Pupil Premium. This pilot was aimed at children or care leavers who attend general Further Education college in Year 12 and Year 13.

Similar to the school aged Pupil Premium, the funding is split between direct funding to the young person and centralised resources. Post-16 Pupil Premium is allocated in the following ways:

PEP Lead (16-25)

Offering advice, guidance, and support to all those supporting looked after children and care leavers, including carers, colleagues in social care and education

Mentoring

Virtual School have a Post-16 Mentor who offers bespoke packages of support, or one-off visits. Requests for this support should be made via the child’s PEP, and in agreement with the PEP Lead (16-25).

Attendance monitoring

The PEP Lead (16-25) and the Post 16 Mentor oversee the weekly monitoring of attendance, and raise any concerns with social care and education settings.

Direct pupil funding

Young people can access additional resources up to £300 per pupil, per financial year.

Examples of this could include: specialist devices, specialist equipment, tuition, mentoring, incentives

The purpose of Pupil Premium is to offer over and above what any other child would expect to receive at home or in education in order to narrow the attainment gap between looked after children and their peers.

The use of Post 16 Pupil Premium should be an agreement between the child, their Social Worker, After Care Worker, carers and education providers. The funding requested should aim to support and improve areas of strength and address areas of development in education.
